Extremity Mirage

The phenomena of "extremity mirage" is where extreme views, amplified by media, create an illusion of dominance, overshadowing moderate opinions and distorting public perception. This phenomenon is most prevalent on social media, where the loudest and most extreme voices often are mistaken for being broadly representative of a group, adding to polarisation. Another possible description for it is tail-mirage, the inability to see the bigger picture or the overall distribution of opinions because of a focus on the extreme ends ('tails') of the distribution.
